The new world of social media allows everyone to show only the highs in their life; we pick and choose what we share and when we share it. 20-year-old Caroline Romano chooses to show both the ups and the downs in her two new songs, “Oddities and Prodigies” and “Lonely Interlude.” The two songs were released September 10th and show both sides of feelings about one’s self.

The A-side, “Oddities and Prodigies,” is an upbeat, pop punk inspired track about embracing who you are, even when things are messy. In the first verse Romano sings, “You’ll find me running down the street / With tears in my eyes, but I’m alright / ‘Cuz I’m alive and I love it.” Later in the chorus, she sings, “But that’s just who I am / Say what you want ‘cuz I don’t give a damn.” It’s an anthem of being unapologetically yourself: the good, the bad, the messy. Caring what others think of her isn’t a problem and shouldn’t be in her opinion. Romano says that “Oddities and Prodigies” is about the beginning of a new chapter.

“It's the first page of the first chapter of this narrative I’m writing,” says Romano. “I’ve set out on a quest to spin something beautiful, even if it is often tragic, as I don’t think you can have one without the other.”

The B-side, “Lonely Interlude,” balances out the release by talking about feelings of loneliness and longing. The more chill, acoustic song depicts Romano walking through the grocery store thinking of someone and waiting on a call that may never come. She sings, “I’ve been waiting for my whole life / For the day I feel alive,” showing how much this person leaving her life has affected her day-to-day life. While “Oddities and Prodigies” shows the part of Romano that is the life of the party, “Lonely Interlude” shows how isolated or lonely people can feel despite coming across as a happy go-getter. It is humanizing, raw, and real.

“Oddities and Prodigies” and “Lonely Interlude” are both available now on all major streaming platforms.
