Great Time’s New Single 80z Slo Jam: “Time To Let It All Out!”

Words by Hannah Kozak

Why try fitting into a box when you can just have a great time? Philadelphia three-piece Great Time wants to do exactly that: focus on having fun and playing music they love. The band takes elements from all different genres, including electronic, jazz, R&B, punk, and rock to make something of their own.

Great Time’s newest, upcoming project is a live album full of new material. “80z Slo Jam,” released October 19th and accompanied by a live video, is the project’s first exciting single. The song has many electronic influences, with ambient noises and subtle, droning synths/guitars. Vocalist Jill Ryan gives a performance almost reminiscent of a mixture of early Lorde band Banks. The live video also only enhances some of the mysterious and ambient sounds of the song (especially at the beginning and end); “80z Slo Jam” was definitely a song designed to be listened to live, and the live video transports the listener to a place that feels more than appropriate.

When speaking on the song, Great Time says they deliberately released this song as part of their upcoming live album to play with more sounds and create a more intense feeling through the instrumentals.

“The original studio recording of this song uses a lot of industrial sounds and has a bit of a robotic feel which I love,” began the band, “but playing it live allows us to explore different timbres and soundscapes which bring out more of a raw and natural, yet intense feeling. I want listeners to blast this new live version of ‘80z Slo Jam’ as a form of cathartic release from everyday vexations like your shitty day job or an annoying roommate. Time to let it all out!”
