Everyone says blondes have more fun, but your blonde phase doesn’t have to be a physical hair change. Blonde is a state of mind. Shallow Alcove explores this idea in their nostalgic new track, “Blonde Phase.” The band, formed in Syracuse, NY and led by Dan Harris and Grace Krichbaum, reflects back to their old college days full of fun memories. “Blonde Phase” is the first single of a three song narrative in Shallow Alcove’s pop era.

The single is mellow and soft; it perfectly captures the essence of attending a lowkey college house party on a chilly fall night. Krichbaum’s buttery, warm vocals accompany the song’s mellow instrumentals incredibly well. She reflects back on old college settings in the chorus, singing do you ever stop and think how sweet it tasted? / before it all came undone / do you ever find that you forget the faces of the places we used to love

The lyrics speak to looking back on an experience and not realizing how good it was in the moment. Something important to the band, however, is to romanticize the past without getting stuck in it. They want to tenderly look back on the memories yet not be consumed by the past. This theme translates from their last EP, Acting Tough, which talked heavily on growing up and the meandering feeling of lost love.

“Since putting out our first project,” began Shallow Alcove, “we have all graduated from college and spent the year crafting a new sound. We thought it was high time that Shallow Alcove had a bit of a pop girl era, so we set out to make a banger that still felt tinged with that Shallow Alcove melancholia. Thus, our single ‘Blonde Phase’ was born.”
